The ‘Candlestick Banksia’ definitely lives up to its name with a bright yellow flower spike up to 30cm tall held above the grey-green foliage. Found from Kalbarri to Cape Leeuwin and across to the Fitzgeral National Park this essential species known as “Biara’ to the Noongar people provides food to a wide array of animals in the summer. Regrowing from a lignotuber after bushfires, this slow-growing shrub usually reaches 2-4m, but can live for up to 300 years and reach an eventual height of 10m given ideal conditions.
